Solving Equations by Addition

Solving equations is easy, but the hard part is showing your work.
1. m + 12 = 22

I know the answer is ten, but how did I get ten? First you add the opposite of what your adding. Since you have to be fair, you do that on both sides of the equation.
1. m + 12 + (-12) = 22 + (-12)

The negative twelve cancels out the positive twelve that you add, so the only part left is the answer.
1. m = 22 + (-12)

And we know that that equals ten.
1. m= 10

Here is another example.
2. x - 12 = 22
x - 12 + 12 = 22 + 12
x = 22 + 12
x = 34
